The Laser with its three rig options is the ideal choice for youth sailors. The 4.7 rig is 35% smaller than the Standard rig and it gives boys and girls the chance to learn and develop Laser sailing at an early age.  The Radial rig is 18% smaller than the standard rig and is used as a Youth class, and by lighter adults.  Larger youth sailors can sail the Standard rig.

VLA conducts a youth regatta each year.  This is usually held in conjunction with the Victorian Masters Championship. Yachting Victoria also conducts the annual Victorian Youth Regatta.

The Junior and Youth calendar culminates in the Australian Youth Championships with
Yachting Australia the organising authority.  The regatta is held in early January and the location rotates around Australian states in parallel with the Laser National Championships, and other classes.  The regatta is a qualifying event for the Youth World Championships. The Laser Radial is the boys and girls class at the Youth Worlds.
