2008 Victorian Laser Championships
Date: 15/3/08 - 16/3/08
Venue: Royal Yacht Club of Victoria
Directions to the course area were simple. Sail out past the Tennix dock, cross the shipping channel quickly, avoid the incoming submarine and bear left of the “Sea Sheppard” at anchor.
Saturday saw a 5-8 knot southerly and two close fought races. The light weather specialists rose to the occasion. Allison Dale led the 4.7’s, John Jagger the Radials and Brett Morris the Standard Rig all with a first and a third to their names.
The management also arranged for a fly past of a couple of Tiger Moths, the Roulettes and 2 F-18 Hornets for between race entertainments- pretty good value for $65!!
Sunday start was early but by start time a strong hot northerly was blowing with gusts to 25 knots. Time for the fit and the fat to take revenge. 3 races back to back, with the wind easing in the last to provide some relief to those burning legs.
Sean Bly sailed with remarkable consistency (4,3,1) and just held out 2007 Champion, Oliver Tweddell by 1 solitary point in the Standard rigs to take his first Victorian Championship – fantastic work Sean. John Jagger continued his good work all summer at the Nationals, Asia Pacific’s and Worlds to impress with 3 bullets to be a clear Radial winner for the second year running. Stephen Collings placed 3,3,1 on the final day to ease past Allison Dale and Jarrad Lincoln in 3rd.
Although the overall fleet was down this year (Radial Worlds and Masters burn out after a long season) the quality was not lacking and we thank RYCV for their hospitality and race management.
